1400 REPORTED DEAD IN CHINA
(N Z. Press Association— Copyright)
TOKYO, February 26.
About 1400 people have been reported killed and 3000 injured since January 1 as the bloody civil strife in China apparently has extended to almost every part of the mainland, the Associated Press reported today.
Official reports from proMao Tse-tung news outlets— Radio Peking and the New China News Agency—admit there has been bloodshed in scattered parts of the mainland in Mao’s struggle against President Liu Shao-chi. The figures have come from information in wall newspapers plastered on Peking walls and in reports from Hong Kong and Taipei, based on accounts from travellers and intelligence agents in China. >
Of China’s 21 provinces at five autonomous regions, Mao’s forces have claimed control of only five: Kweichow, Heilungkiang, Shansi, Shantung and Kansu. “Continuing Trouble”
But in all five, the Mao news outlets have admitted continuing trouble. In almost all the other provinces and autonomous regions there have been ad-
missions of trouble. Freqiently the propaganda outlets have charged the antiMaoists with “white terror”— meaning torture, persecution —and killings. There have been claims that the “white terror” was suppressed, often by Army units.
