Jay Ay Likely To Win Sprint

"The Press" Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Mixed Reception is likely to win the Rangitikei Cup today. The mare has worked faultlessly and done well. She will strip at her peak for the first leg of the Rangitikei Racing Club’s T.A.B. double.

H. N. Rauhihi, who will ride her, is looking forward to the race with confidence.

She won decisively In her last start, at Hawera, and Rauhiihi expects the mare to continue with her form against what appears to be a field of moderate class.

Only Dervish appears likely to trouble her. He will be ridden by W. D. Skelton and, after his good second to Fon at Woodville last Saturday, Dervish looks a solid each-way proposition.

In the last few days Dervish’s stablemate, Jay Ay, has assured himself of favouritism in the Mangatapu Handicap, the second leg of the double. He ran a near-record gallop on the track on Thursday. Jay Ay. a son of Passive and thus a half-brother to Sobig, has developed so rapidly lately that his trainer, T. R. Howe, has decided to take him back to Trentham, where he won two races. Although Jay Ay is moving up a grade to open class this week-end, he should not be inconvenienced by the step for he is the best galloper at Awapuni and he will not be against a high-class field. J. R. O’Neill, who won the Woodville Cup on Fon, will ride Jay Ay. He may not make the correct weight of 7-3, but he will not be much above it. Yoshiko looks the one to test Jay Ay. The winner of three of her four latest starts, she also will be having her first try at open company and she is ready for it. Yoshiko had her first win at Bulls, so the track should suit her. She may make the pace and although she may have trouble keeping out Jay Ay she should prove too good for the rest.
