Firemen Injured

Eight engines attended the fire with two on standby. The Deputy Chief Fire Officer (Mr C. Stevenson) was in charge of operations, assisted by the third and fourth fire officers, nine station officers, and 30 men.

A third casualty was reported later. A fireman, Richard Doorne, was admitted to hospital suffering from severe effects of smoke fumes, at 2.45 a.m. At 3 a.m., three further firemen were brought into the casualty department suffering from suspected chlorine poisoning. Dr. Stewart, the casualty officer, said: “I expect more casualties from this cause.”
