Australia May Adopt System

(N.Z. Prest Association)

SYDNEY, February 23.

Australia is to examine the working of New Zealand’s disaster fund to see whether a similar fund could be set up to assist victim* of disasters such as the recent Tasmanian bushfires.

The Prime Minister, Mr Harold Holt, said this in the House of Representatives in reply to a Tasmanian member, Mr L. H. Barnard, who urged the Government to consider establishing a special disaster fund-

Mr Holt said that previous governments had rejected similar proposals, but he would examine disaster funds in New Zealand, Canada and the United States to see whether Australia could learn anything from the experience of those countries.
