WANGANUI.
In six hours of shock collapses, brilliant fight-backs and dynamic fast bowling, Central Districts and the New Zealand under-23 team fought a tense battle on the first day of their three-day match at Wanganui yesterday.
Central Districts, batting first on a hard, true wicket, failed to reproduce its solid Plunket Shield form in compiling a disappointing 208. After going to lunch at 113 for two, Central folded up in the early afternoon to the spin of J. R. Syme, of Auckland, who collected four cheap wickets. But the Plunket Shield holder struck back sensationally when the under-23 side batted, capturing six wickets for 55. Then, due principally to a magnificent innings by W. J. Mitchell, the under-23 team fought back to be 127 for seven wickets at stumps. Mitchell had scored 74 not out.
G. A. Bartlett bowled himself into an almost certain place in the Central side to play Australia next week with two spells of hurricane pace bowling. He claimed two vital wickets for only 19 runs in 10 overs. CENTRAL DISTRICTS First Innings P. J. Coutts, c Isherwood. b Collinge 49 D. N. Macleod, c Turner, b Collinge .. 7 B. E.
