FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT

Situation. —A weakening ridge of high pressure covers northern New Zealand. An active front lying north-west/south-east across the South Island is moving slowly northwards. Forecast:

Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast.—Fresh gusty north-westerlies probably persisting in the more northern areas but winds mainly moderate and variable south of Banks Peninsula, further heavy rain on the near western high country; cloudy and warm with scattered rain elsewhere. A slow improvement from the south is likely during the day.

Marlborough.—lnland, north-westerlies strong in exposed areas, gale force at times; mainly cloudy and warm with some scattered rain, especially on and near the western high country. For Marlborough Sounds: Strong to gale north-wester-lies; cloudy anti mild with periods of rain.

Buller and Westland. —Strong northerlies in more northern areas but moderate variable winds in the south spreading slowly northwards; overcast and mild with further long periods of rain, often heavy but probably a gradual clearance to showery weather in the south tomorrow.

Outlook: Some rain still likely in more northern areas, elsewhere mainly cloudy with scattered showers.
