TROTTING Forbury Candidates Perform Well

If Humphrey and Frosty Heather run up to the form which gave them victories in the respective heats of the free-for-all at the trials held by the Mid-Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association at Ashburton yesterday they should be sourid prospects for the T.A.B. double at Forbury Park next Saturday evening.

Hu.mphjvey is an acceptor for the Life Members’ Handicap and Frosity Heather will run 5n the Crescent Handicap on the first night of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s festival meeting.

Humphrey was one of the tail-enders haff-a-mile out in the first heat. W. E. Lowe brought him forward on a strong run outside the last furlong and it carried him into the lead right on the line.

Humphrey beat Doctor Barry, which shared the fourth line with Space Cadet until the home, by a nose. Space Cadet, which took the short way along the inside in the run home, was a neck away third. Happy Sam, the early pacemaker. was fourth, three parts of a length back. Julie Hanover, which had every chance, was next.

Chequer Board, which was sweating profusely and was slow off the mark, made ground from the back to lead in the others.

Frosty Heather came out best by a nose from the trotter, Forward March, in the second heat. Frosty Heather ran in midfield till the hdme turn. D. Mangos brought her wide out to make a run at the leaders with a furlong to go and she took the lead away from Forward March in the last stride. Forward March, an acceptor for the Otago Handicap on Saturday night, shaped very well. She was third on the inner around to the straight and matched the pacers for speed in the run home.

Overtime, which received the run of the race behind Hal Special to the straight, was half a length away third. Wee Herb, a co-leader on the home turn, was a neck back fourth. Bob Again led in the others.

Humphrey ran the mile and a half in 3min 24 l-ssec and Frosty Heather’s time for the distance was 3min 25sec.

Two-year-olds

Imperial Way, an acceptor for the Bay of Plenty Juvenile Stakes at Tauranga next Monday, was responsible for a very fast mile in the second heat of the Two-year-old Parade. Mr W. D. Robinson’s Raceabout gelding led for the last six furlongs and won by

half a length from Bewitched. Imperial Way ran the distance in 2min 13 4-Ssec and came his last half in Imin 6sec.

The runner-up, a filly by Thurber Frost from the good race mare Samantha, was also impressive. This youngster, a member of G. B. Noble’s stable at Yaldhurst, trailed for a time then dropped back to the rear but ran on solidly again in the last furlong. Winslow Lady, which led for a time then trailed to the straight, was two lengths away third. She shaded Khandallah, which was back with Bewitched on the home turn.

The first heat, won by Winterace, a Light BrigadeSoubrette filly prepared by R. W. Curtin at Templeton, was run at a fairly slow rate. She took 2min 25sec for the mile but quickened to run the last half in Imin 6 4-ssec.

Winterace tracked Happy Hal to the straight, came through on the inside close to the end and outfinished the pacemaker by half a length. Good Chase, which was close up all the way, was half a length away third. He just shaded Aururn, co-leader on the home turn.

Royal Walk, Keep Smiling and Sea provided a tight finish to the third heat, run in smart time.

Royal Walk improved from the fourth line to challenge Keep Smiling and Sea for the lead just inside the last furlong and ran it out best to win by a nose. Keep Smiling, which tried for an all-the-way win, beat Sea, second in the running around to the straight, by a neck. Credo, third into line, was fourth in a small gap. Royal Walk, a gelding by King Creed from Stroll prepared at Methven by C. V. May. ran the mile in 2min 16 3-ssec and came his last half in Imin ssec.

Led All The Way Kimberley Kid, an acceptor for the Opoho Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday night, gained an all-the-way win in the first heat of the 2min 19sec class pace. Caplin, which led the chase all the way, was a length away second, half a neck ahead of Double Step, running on from the back mark of 36 yards. Next home was Junior Whip, which tracked the winner throughout. The second heat went to Dryden Pal, which finished

strongly wide opt to shade Dark Sun for first. Dark Sun which made his bid on the inside after racing in the third line to the straight, was clear of Nestabelle, which led for six furlongs then trailed Screen Play to the straight. Udette, running on from mid-field, beat Screen Play for fourth.

Kimberley Kid’s time for the mile and a half was 3min 34 l-ssec, the final half-mile in Imin 4sec. Dryden Pal, from 36 yards, took 3min 28 4-ssec, for the distance and Imin 6 l-ssec for the final half-mile.

Easy Win Phenoma, which will start from 36 yards in the Vauxhall Handicap; at Forbury Park on Saturday, gave away starts of up to 108 yards and a sound beating to 10 rivals in the second heat of the 2min 20sec class trot.

Phenoma improved quickly from mid-field to take the lead three furlongs out and ran right away to win by five lengths. Stormy Time, which tracked the pacemaker, Superwise, around to the straight, beat Black Frost for second by three lengths. Black Frost, from 60 yards, followed the winner around the home turn.

Free Globe, from the back mark of 132 yards, made

much ground for fourth. He added to his handicap by being slow off the mark. If he begins correctly he should be a strong prospect from the limit in the Otago Handicap on Saturday night. Phenoma trotted the mile and a half in 3min 30 4-ssec and came her last half-mile Imin 7 2-ssec.

Bertha Jo improved through on the inner from the third line in the last furlong of the first heat and ran on well to beat the pacemaker, Coronet Peak by a length and a half.

Netherby improved a few places in the run home for third. He was a length and a half from Coronet Peak and two lengths ahead of Single Way, which weakened slightly after racing on the outside and close to the lead till the straight. Bertha Jo took 3min 36 3-ssec for the distance and came the last half-mile in Imin 8 4-ssec.

Soft Magic shaped like a winning prospect for the maiden events at Nelson with an end-to-end win in the first heat of the 2min 20sec class pace. Soft Magic won by two and a half lengths from Willowbrae, which ran on solidly after a slow start to beat Morissa for second.

Soft Magic’s stablemate, Silver Strip, which is also engaged at Nelson, tried the same tactics in the second heat and just failed to hold off Shady Maid, which received the run of the race. Jib, which broke at the start, made a lot of ground for third without being pushed and Falancia led in the others.
