Opal Rush In N.S.W.

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.)

SYDNEY, January 24.

Miners are rushing to White Cliffs, 165 miles north of Broken Hill, in the hot and dusty New South Wales outback, following what could prove to be one of Australia’s richest opal strikes. A rich opal vein was unearthed last week by a veteran miner, Mr Paul Rigby, aged 46, who struck high quality opal while digging with a penknife. Mr Rigby staked his claim immediately after making his find and has been working ever since, in temperatures above 100 degrees.

White Cliffs residents say it is impossible to put a value on Mr Rigby’s find, but they believe it is the best since a group of miners from South Australia unearthed opal worth $200,000 two years ago.
