Archbishop Of York To Visit Christchurch
The Archbishop of York (the Most Rev. D. Coggan) and Mrs Coggan will visit Christchurch on March 3 and 4 during a nine-day visit to New Zealand beginning in Auckland on February 24. The visit is being made at the invitation of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Archbishop Coggan is the president of the United Bible Societies of the World, and he will speak at Bible society meetings in the main centres of his tour. Archbishop Coggan and Mrs (Coggan will arrive in ChristI church from Dunedin at 7.15 p.m. on Friday, March 3. They will stay with the (Bishop of Christchurch (the
Rt. Rev. W. A. Pyatt) and Mrs Pyatt at Bishopscourt. At 8 p.m. on Friday Archbishop Coggan will address a public meeting arranged by the Christchurch branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Christchurch Cathe. dral.
The secretary of the society (Miss K. L. Bint) said yesterday that Archbishop Coggan would speak mainly on the work of the United Bible Societies for the next two years. An address of welcome would be given by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning). At 10.30 a.m. on Saturday Archbishop Coggan would address a meeting of ministers and clergy at the Oxford terrace Baptist Church. It was hoped that Mrs Coggan would be able to meet wives of clergymen. At midday a picnic lunch would be held at Bishopscourt for clergy and their wives. Archbishop Coggan and Mrs Coggan would leave Christchurch for Sydney at 5 p.m., Miss Bint said. Archbishop Coggan would also visit Auckland, Napier, Hamilton, Nelson, Wellington and Dunedin. His other New Zealand engagements would include a thanksgiving service for the recently completed part of the new Auckland Cathedral, luncheon with the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) and Lady Fergusson, a reception and Maori welcome at Ohinemutu, and a meeting with the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake).
