BOOK ON MASSACRE

Attack On Pius XII

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ROME, January 23. The late Pope Pius XII, accused by some historians of failing to speak out against Hitler’s mass murder of Jews, is blamed in a forthcoming book for not trying to save 335 Italians killed by the Nazis in the Ardeatine caves massacre in March, 1944, United Press International reports. A high Vatican source said last night that the charge would “be simple to disprove because it is a vicious lie.” In “Death In Rome,” to be published on January 30, the American author, Robert Katz, says the late Pope participated by his silence in the German reprisal slayings. “In other words, it must now be said, Pope Pius XII, chose to do nothing in full awareness that action by him might prevent the reprisal,” Mr Katz says. The Vatican source said “Osservatore Romano” (the Vatican newspaper) would reispond to the charges after I the book is published.
