Junior Tennis Surprise By Unseeded Player

An unseeded player, G. Kerridge (Auckland) caused a major upset when he beat the No. 1 seed in the under-19 boys’ singles, D. A. Parun (Wellington), 6-3, 7-5, on the first day of the 1967 Canterbury junior tennis championships at Wilding Park vesterdav.

In blustery, overcast conditions Kerridge was too consistent for Parun who mixed poor shots with often brilliant play. Kerridge raced away to a 4-0 lead in the first set but Parun broke back to be down 3-5. However, Kerrldge’s powerful service carried him through to win the set. Down 4-5 in the second set, Kerridge forced Parun into error and came out on top 7-5. Considering Kerridge has played little tennis since Christmas his was a fine effort.

Other surprises In the under--19 boys’ singles were the defeat of the No. 4 seed, W. Tuck, by J. Cowern, and the defeat of the Beckenham senior player, P. McGoldrick, by N. Morrison. Both winners were unseeded.

All other seeded players had fairly comfortable wins.
