Chance To Set N.Z. Record

The New Zealand short course record holder for 880 yards freestyle, A. B. Kindred, will have a chance of capturing the long course mark as well during the Canterbury men’s 1650 yd swimming championship at the Centennial Pool tonight.

Three timekeepers will take Kindred’s time at the end of the sixteenth length, in case he passes the half-mile mark in a time faster than 9min 42.25ec, the national long course record held by R. D. Walker (Wellington). Kindred made a good recovery from a throat infection late last year and, with more than 300 miles in training swims behind him, has been in splendid form for the centre title meeting. He has already swum his personal best times for 110 yd and 220 yd in winning the senior championships over these distances.

Before the start of the season, he weighed 14st 71b, but is now in excellent racing trim at 13st. His fast times

over the shorter distance should give him greater confidence for the middle distance events.

Kindred’s coach (Mr V. T. Parkhouse), said that the Wharenui swimmer has a good chance of beating Walker’s 880 yd mark tonight. “But,” he added, “I hope he does not do a tumble turn at the half-way mark.”
