CYCLING “CUP NIGHT”

It is almost “Cup night” at English Park this evening. The cycling meeting will feature four cup events, two each by cash and amateur riders.

The cash races will be keenly awaited. K. R. Jeffery and O. Hagan, and, to a lesser extent, G. 0. Moore, have been the top cash riders this season, but M. R. Woolford has shown remarkable improvement in recent weeks. It appears that Woolford was done an injustice in last week’s Thompson Cup race, when only given third placing, and it would be fitting if he was to win the Hope Gibbons Cup, a one-mile handicap race.

The other cash cup race is a five-mile scratch event for the Althea Fitzgerald Cup, and it is likely that one of the strong sprinters—Jeffery, perhaps, in bis present formwill win.

The amateurs’ cup races are in two different grades: the H. and T. Cup for A grade riders: and the BA.L. Cup for the B Grade. Both are run over a series of three races with points for platings. The A grade races are a quarter-mile and one-

mile handicap events, and a five-mile points race. Those for the B grade cup are a halfand one-mile handicap races and a three-mile “devil take the hindmost” The other event of most interest is a 4000 metres

teams’ pusuit between the seniors (J. H. Cleary, P. A. Skilling, R. D. Mann and C. B. Fitzgerald) and the possible junior team for the national championships (S. J. Stephen, D. Jones, B. G. Stockwell and G. W. Wood.
