Strong Drift At Beach
Two youths who appeared in difficulties yesterday afternoon in the surf at South Brighton were escorted closer to the shore by a patrolman, Mr J. Robinson.
Mr Robinson said the youths, in about 6ft of water, were caught in a strong southerly drift. He swam out to them and accompanied them back to the beach. Patrolmen are concerned that persons go beyond their depth while there is a drift, and advise bathers to stay close to the shore and swim between the flags. Christchurch beaches were popular until the north-west-erly wind changed to the south-west during the afternon. More than 200 persons were swimming at South Brighton at 2 p.m., and at the other beaches there were many bathers.
