Hottest Day Of Year

Christchurch had its hottest day this year when a temperature of 86 degrees was recorded at Harewood at 3 p.m. yesterday. Soon afterwards the north-west wind changed to a southerly, and by 4 p.m. the temperature had dropped 16 degrees.

At 5 p.m. the temperature was 68 degrees, but during a period of calm about 7 p.m. the temperature rose again to 72 degrees. It was 69 degrees at 8 p.m. when a moderate wind was blowing from the south-west.

In the morning the weather was cloudy, and the temperature was 73 degrees at 9 a.m. and 83 degrees at noon. At the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. the temperature was 80 degrees. At 4.30 p.m. the temperature gauge on the Government Life building showed 68 degrees, the same temperature being shown at 10 p.m.

Four hundred workers went home because of the heat at the Belfast works of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Ltd. High humidity on the mutton board was to blame for the men going home after holding a lunch-hour meeting to discuss the heat, said the assistant works manager (Mr G. Mooney). The men are expected to return this morning.
