KY PROTEST MEETING

500 Gather In Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. Between 500 and 600 people attended a meeting in the Auckland Town Hall today protesting against the coming visit of Air Vice-Marshal Ky. The audience, which was orderly and generally quiet, was addressed by four speakers. They were the Rev. E. A. Johnston, Sub-Dean of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Mr G. De Bres, a member of the Student Christian Movement, Mr C. K. Stead, associate professor of English at Auckland University and Mr Hone Tuwhare, a poet. The chairman of the meeting was Mr L. W. S. Reid, of Otahuhu, who is chairman of the Ky Protest Committee. A collection taken at the meeting, which will be used to cover the costs of the protest, realised £9l 3s 6d. Mr Reid said demonstrations were planned for the arrival of Air Vice-Marshal Ky at Auckland international airport, outside his hotel and at the Auckland Town Hall during a civic reception for him.

The meeting passed a resolution urging the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) to “apologise publicly on New Zealand’s behalf to the people of Vietnam for yielding to outside pressure by giving official recognition to a dictator who has shown himself to be totally removed from the needs of his own people as well as a supporter of policies repugnant to a democracy like ours.”
