DEMAND ON SPACE
Ferry Cargoes Restricted
The heavy demand for carshipping space on the Aramoana and Aranui has caused such an accumulation of north-bound cargo at Picton that the Railways Department cannot accept small lots of goods or parcels for northbound shipment on the ferries until Februaiy 4. This was announced by the department’s district traffic manager (Mr R. Leineweber). He said full truck-loads of goods for contract users were still being accepted on a restricted basis, and traffic should return to normal from February 6, when the car traffic was expected to ease. The department’s rail-air and through-booking services by rail and coastal shipping provided alternatives for customers wishing to send small lines of goods to the North Island before February 4, Mr Leineweber said.
