JUVENILE WIN

Canny Day Narrowly Canny Day resisted a strong late challenge from Marygrad to win the Nursery Handicap for his Methven owner, Mr R. S. Orr, at Trentham yesterday. Trained at Washdyke by E. P. Corboy, Canny Day is a close relation of the brilliant miler, Ballochmyle, and he shapes as if he could take high ranging among the firstseason horses.

Canny Day failed in the Wellington Stakes on the first day of the meeting, but was very unsettled before the start and broke out of his stall. He was cooler when he went to the start yesterday, and though he was the last to be taken into the stalls he jumped out well and was soon leading. J. R. Dowling rode Canny Day into a fairly wide lead near the two furlongs, and this move paid off. The Washdyke youngster shortened stride close to home, but Marygrad got to him too late. The Auckland youngster was in the middle of the field and was forced fairly wide when they left the chute, but he showed no lack of gameness in his long run out in the middle of the course. Big Push, which led the chase after Canny Day to the final furlong, weakened to third two lengths from Marygrad, and had little to spare from Ima Martian, a promising colt from Flying Symbol, which did most of her racing in the South Island.
