TIMELY WIN

Computer In Auction

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. Computer, the eighth , favourite of 12, passed the consistent Bywon close to the post for a decisive win in the January Handicap at Trentham yesterday. Computer’s return to form was timely. Mr M. Marinovich’s Messmate—Light Opera gelding will be offered at auction at Trentham today. G. F. Hughes, who had ridden without luck earlier at the meeting, had Computer towards the back for a start, but in a handy-sized field it was not difficult for him to pick up ground quickly from the home turn. Acis had made the pace, with Bywon in close attendance. Sonya’s Pride was the favourite, being given every chance in the trailing position by the successful Australian rider, J. Johnson. Acis did not last long once they made the straight but Bywon was strongly engaged by Lu Filou at the furlong, and by Computer a little later. Computer won going away by half a length, and Bywon beat Lu Filou by a short neck for second. Special Request made a likely run going to the half furlong, but was battling in the last 50 yards and could not improve on fourth. Fairfleet was a creditable fifth after being checked in the straight.
