Had Broken Thumb

(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) DUBLIN. The Australian five-eighth, P. Hawthorne, played most of the Rugby Union test against Ireland on Saturday in pain with a broken thumb. The thumb will not be put in plaster, and he will be able to finish the tour, he was told on Sunday. Hawthorne snapped the bone in the joint of his left thumb early in the first half, when he collided with one of Ireland's forwards and his hand banged against the Irishman’s boot. He battled for the rest of the test in spite of continual throbbing and sharp jabs of pain every time the ball jarred his hand. His courageous effort was in vain as Ireland won the test, 15-8.
