Casper shaved three strokes off par with a 69 on Sunday to take a one-stroke lead in the third round of the annual 104,500 dollars Bing Crosby golf tournament Casper, the United States Open champion and twice winner of this event opened with two birdies on the Long Pebble beach couree to take the lead away from Jack Nicklaus, who lost a two-stroke advantage with a 74 on the rugged Spyglass hill course. Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, who roared back into contention with a five-under-par 67 tied for second with 2165, one behind Casper. R. J. Charles shot a 72, for a three-round total of 231.
