WON SHORT OF MAN
Wharemii In Second Place
In a snappy display of water polo last evening Wharenui defeated a highly-favoured University side to move into second place in the senior championship. Although playing one man short throughout the entire match, Wharenui made the most of the opposition's errors to win, 4-1.
The outstanding players for Wharenui were Canterbury representatives M. McGirr and I. Farquhar. McGirr swam, passed and shot at goal with concentration and ability far in excess of his actual pdaying experience, and Farquhar, in the Wharenui goal, saved several powerful snots from the University forwards.
The University players, I. Gunthorp and W. Williamson, won the swim-ups but poor passing and a failure in defence allowed McGirr to score four goals, including two penalties. I. Simson, R. Erickson, and P. Carpinter, for Wharenui, all shone on defence Gunthorp, for University, scored in the last seconds of the match. Even Match Spreydon and Christchurch fought a close match to draw, 2-2, with both the goalkeepers. J. Monk and T. Bayliss, playing well. Fast breaking by Spreydon # N. Roake and Christchurch’s J. Turpin led to three good goals and at the end of the first quarter Christchurch led, 2-1. Although K. Lanyon won the next three swim-ups, Spreydon netted in the fourth quarter to level the scores. Still Unbeaten Strong play by L. Mclntosh helped Beckenham retain its unbeaten record by defeating Elmwood, 7-1. This match was part of Beckenham’s final preparation for its South Island final of the New Zealand club championship against Otago University to be played on Saturday. Scorers for Beckenham were Mclntosh (3), R. Henry, G. McKenzie, G. Knight, and F. McKenzie, and for Elmwood C. Gurr scored.
