Race Against Time Puts West On Top
West Christchurch-University on Saturday went a step closer to its first senior cricket championship for more than 30 years. A thrilling victory over Sydenham, five minutes from time, gave it a five-point lead for the club title.
Although St. Albans was out for 42, the season’s lowest score, the first innings lead and bonus points it had taken from Riccarton kept it in second place. In the other match Old Boys beat Lancaster Park on the first innings. Results: —
Riccarton 96 and 186/8 declared beat St Albans 125 and 42 by 116 runs.
West Christchurch - University 152 and 137/7 beat Sydenham 160 and 127/9 declared by three wickets. Old Boys 280 beat Lancaster Park 168 and 127/7 by 112 runs on the first innings. The highest scorer for the day was the Riccarton and Canterbury batsman, C. L. Broad, who made 70 in difficult conditions against St. Albans. The most spectacular innings was by J. R. Veitch (West-University), who hit five 6’s and three 4’s in making 44 runs. Although Riccarton’s bowlers prospered greatly, the only player to take five wickets in an innings was P. A. Thomas (Sydenham). Competition points are: West Christchurch-University 40, St. Albans 35, Riccarton 33, Old Boys 31, Lancaster Park 27, Sydenham 24.
