Elaborate Precautions

Australian and South Vietnamese security agents are working on elaborate arrangements to protect Air Vice-Marshal Nguyen Cao Ky during his visit to Australia beginning on Wednesday. In the last week plans for demonstrations against the South Vietnamese Prime Minister have been gaining momentum, spurred by calls from the Labour opposition leader, Mr Arthur Calwell,

and some union leaders. Marshal Ky will arrive in Canberra on Wednesday at the start of a “sentimental visit” and will visit Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne during his five-day stay before flying on to New Zealand. Security plans for his visit to Sydney are understood to provide for the total sealing off of inner Sydney’s harbourside, Kirribilli Point, where he Is expected to stay at Admiralty House. Marshal Ky’s Sydney itinerary includes a harbour cruise on Saturday. Police patrol

boats will keep spectator craft at least 100 yards from his launch.

On shore, plans have been made for a State police guard of at least 1200 men to be on duty. A helicopter will follow him wherever he goes and will direct police reinforcements to potential trouble spots. In addition to the huge Federal and State security screen. Marshal Ky will have his own personal bodyguard of South Vietnamese commandos during the Australian visit.
