India
Sir, —The article about India’s Prime Minister made fascinating reading. This wretched woman must surely still hate the British for what they did to India and its revered age-old customs and traditions. Just imagine —if the British had not abolished the religious and purifying custom of Suttee, she would have been burned to death on her husband’s funeral pyre and not had to face today’s terrifying problems. Rather ironic though, to see in “The Press” two pictures this week from Calcutta. One of some Indian wretches allegedly starving to death, the other of some 100,000 Indians who can apparently find time from work to watch a cricket match and stage a riot there. Happy thought. The Indians are now being shot by their very own Indian police. Or can the British Raj be blamed even for this?—Yours, etc., WHITE ROSE. January 11, 1967.
