China
Sir, —To the knowledgeable ones, the grey beards of wisdom, where ignorance is bliss it is folly to be wise.—Yours, etc., ROBERT M. ATKINSON. January 14, 1967.
Sir, —The questions of “White Rose” having nothing to do with the original argument, but since he insists, the answer is as follows: Chairman Mao states, “It is right to rebel,” just as some people say “It is right to oppress, or exploit.” The first brings revolution, the second counter-revolution. In coun-
ter-revolutions there has been heavy losses of life. Rewi Alley informed me that in measures taken to exterminate the Communists in China, 10 million Chinese were killed. Peter Townsend in “China Phoenix” states, “The Shanghai massacre was duplicated in other cities under Chiang’s control, and through all the territories won by the revolutionaries, counter-revo-lution succeeded revolution.” In these purges 100,000 Communists alone were killed. Recently there is the counterrevolution in Indonesia, where 300,000 Communists were slaughtered. Remember also Lumumba. So there has been a great loss of life because some brave people dare to rebel.—Yours, etc., P.J.A. January 15, 1967.
