RACING Canterbury Colts or Dominate Guineas

"Th, Preu” Special Service INVERCARGILL. The Canterbury colts, Roman General from Riccarton and Pacemaker from Washdyke, should dominate the finish of the Southland Guineas at Invercargill today.

Usually restricted to half a dozen runners or less, the feature three-year-old event has this year drawn a field to 10—seven colts and three fillies.

Roman General, which ran fourth in the New Zealand Derby and second in the Stonyhurst Handicap, at the New Zealand Cup meeting, began his holiday campaign with a decisive win over a mile on the first day of the Dunedin Cup meeting. The Agricola colt lost none of his admirers when he was beaten by half a head by Batmans in the hack mile at Invercargill on Tuesday. His strong finish was a feature of the race.

Pacemaker has shown himself equal to the best three-year-olds in the South Island. He won the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton in the spring and failed by half a head to catch Our Leigh in the Dunedin Guineas. Pacemaker was also narrowly beaten by Seminole, a later winner at Riccarton and fourth in the New Zealand Cup. The successful sire, Bellborough, which has sired a number of three-year-old winners this season, will have a top filly. Red Sash, and a smart colt. Gars, to represent him.

Bellborough sired the Southland Guineas winners Rondabelie (1964) and Town Crier (1965). Red Sash, winner of the open sprint on the first day of the Dunedin Cup meeting, was a close fourth in the Leopard Gold Cup, six furlongs, at Invercargill, after making all the pace. Although Gars can hardly be rated alongside Red Sash, he has not been out of the money in his last six starts, including a second to Roman General at Wingatui. The T.AJ). double will be on the President’s and Birchwood Handicaps. The track is in good order. Selections:— Noon.—Gladstone Hurdles: Arabian Light bracket.
