Fort Nelson Selected In Trotting Derby

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. South Island horses are expected to dominate the Great Northern Trotting Derby, a feature event on the final night of the Auckland Trotting Club’s Cup meeting at Alexandra Park tonight.

Fort Nelson, unbeaten in two starts at the meeting, looks almost certain to be favourite. But another Southland representative, Killadar, is also given a great chance and if the brilliant filly Gilt happened to begin correctly, she would be hard to beat.

Golden Sands, from the Hunter stable at Wellington, is expected to be the best of the North Island candidates, although the Pukekohe colt, Governor Frost, is sure

to carry fairly good support Governor Frost has been a little disappointing so far at the meeting but he has not had very much luck in the running. Tobias will be at short odds in the Champion Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double. He has done well since being narrowly beaten by Waitaki Hanover in Tuesday night’s cup and, off the limit, looks a good proposition.

Waitaki Hanover, in spite of his stiff handicap, will have a big following. He is the best beginner in the field and should soon be reasonably handy. Viking Water and Elegant Hanover may be the best of the others. Port Boxer is fancied for the second leg, the Durham Handicap. The weather looks settled and the track will be fast Selections:— 6.15 p.m.—Oak Handicap: Glen Ogle, Kama Sarbl, Avalon Direct. 8.45 p.m.—Ranfurly Handl* cap: Richard Hanover, Stronghold, Reydon Prince. 7.30 p.m.—New Year Handicap: Aka Eden, Calm Autumn, Bosun. 8.25 p.m.—Champion Handicap: Tobias, Waitaki Hanover, Viking Water. 8.55 p.m.—Great Northern Trotting Derby: Fort Nelson, Killadar.
