Two Eruptions On White Island
(New Zealand Press Association)
ROTORUA, December 30.
White Island, the active volcano 25} miles from Whakatane, erupted twice this morning, sending heavy sulphur-laden steam clouds up to 7000 ft.
It was the fourth occasion in recent weeks the island has shown increased activity. The first eruption, seen at Whakatane, Ohope and Opotiki, occurred shortly before 8 a.m. and next began at 10 a.m. and lasted about 30 minutes.
A fine day gave thousands of visitors a clear view of the eruptions. Last month a new crater was formed by an eruption and a week later, while a party of 19 was visting the island, a second eruption occurred.
