No Damage Reported
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SANTIAGO, Dec. 30. Two new sharp tremors shook Chile yesterday, less than 36 hours after an earthquake killed three people and injured five in the northern coastal area.
The Interior Ministry said the tremors caused no casualties or damage. They struck south and central Chile, but were not felt near the northern town of Taltal, to which people were beginning to return after their wooden homes were flattened. About half the wooden houses in Taltal, a town of 11,000 at the mouth of the Taltal river, were levelled. Government lorries rushed drinking water to the area after pipe-lines were snapped. Slight tremors could still be felt last night in the town. Telephone communication with Santiago, the capital, has been restored, and slight damage to rail lines repaired. It was the second major earthquake in Chile in the last two years. On March 28, 1965, central Chile was hit by an earthquake which claimed 400 lives. Five years earlier, 5700 people were killed in southern Chile.
