Cunis Demoralises Northern Batsmen

(New Zealand Press Association) WHANGAREI. A magnificent spell of 26 overs by the New Zealand fast bowler, R. S. Cunis, and some sparkling batting by the openers, R. M. Harris and T. W. Jarvis, put Auckland well on top of Northern Districts at Cobham Oval, Whangarei, yesterday.

Cunis took seven wickets for 30 and bowled almost throughout Northern Districts’ innings of 127.

At stumps, Auckland had replied with 122 for the loss of only two wickets. Cunis was ably assisted by the rangy left-arm pace

bowler, R. E. Sutton, and also by the left-arm leg-spinner, H. J. Howarth. But one of the most vital factors was the splendid Auckland fielding. On the ground it was faultless, while several excellent catches were held. Once Cunis had Northern Districts on the run he did not allow them to recover. He and Sutton were assisted to some extent by the fact that showers caused two breaks during the long morning session, allowing them to rebuild their energy. But Cunis had energy to burn. Districts Tied Down He hammered the ball into the pitch over after over and completely tied down the batsmen. Then, at intervals, he whisked them away. The best Northern Districts batsmen were the aggressive left-hander, G. V. Giles, who scored an attractive 40, and P. D. Stone, who hit a forceful 22. The Northern bowling lacked penetration and the fielding was well below the standard' set by the Aucklanders. H. T. Schuster accomplished a smart feat when he threw out Harris but none of the others really distinguished themselves.
