Christmas Week Use Of Parking Buildings

The Lichfield street carparking building was essentially important as a convenience for shoppers, and it was evident the site was nearly twice as flexible as the Manchester street site, the chairman of the Lichfield Street Park Action Committee (Mr C. D. Ogilvie) said yesterday. The building itself made for easy, safe parking, even for the learner-driver, he said.

“The Press” on Saturday reported that a record number of about 1050 cars used the City Council’s Manchester street parking building on the Friday before Christmas, and that a similar number used the Tuam street park, Mr Ogilvie said.

The Lichfield street park, however, was used by 1800 cars, and whereas the Manchester street building was reported as being full for most of the day, there was room for more in the Lichfield street park, except for one five-minute period. In all, 5200 cars parked in the Lichfield street building during Christmas week. The public obviously found the park convenient and easy to use, Mr Ogilvie said. “There was usually a constant flow of cars in and out of the building all day, but on the late night of Tuesday everyone shopped right up to 9 p.m.

With all cars leaving the building at once, the adaptability of this building was severely tested. More than 400 cars left in less than 20 minutes, an average of a car every three seconds, he said. It was a most impressive performance.
