Policy Unchanged

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Dec. 20.

Items which were exempt from import lieencing would not be recontrolled, the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) said today. He said the exemption for woven woollen fabrics weighing not more than 5j ounces a square yard, which is due to expire on June 30, would be continued until June 30, 1968.

The decision confirms the assurances that it was not the Government’s intention to reimpose import licensing once it was removed, he said. “It is hoped this early announcement will enable the commercial community to plan their trading in exempt items in a manner which will avoid excessive imports and unnecessary drain on the country’s overseas exchange reserves.”
