HARVARDS REPAIRED

All except one of the 18 Harvards at the R.N.Z.A.F. base, Wigram, have been cleared for flying after being grounded when cracks were found in a span of a training aircraft on October 7.

About 50 per cent of the aircraft were found to have incipient cracks in the middle section of the wing assembly front spar. The cause was thought to be metal fatigue as the Harvard fleet is more than 22 years old. Air Commodore D. F. St. George, air officer commanding Training Group Headquarters, said yesterday that all the spar booms were replaced as the spares were available and it was a form of extra insurance.
