Plan To Restore Historic Church
OSLO. A committee has been formed to raise funds and ; organise the rebuilding in a remote part of the Filefjell mountains, in south-west Nor- , way, of a 12th century wooden . church originally dedicated to St Thomas a’Beckett of Canterbury. The church, which could accommodate a congregation of 100 and used to be famous for the sweet tone of its two bells, had a strange history. Built towards the end of the 12th century on an ancient pagan site it later fell into disuse and was lost. Later rediscovered by a roaming ■
hunter and restored, it became a centre of pilgrimage and won a reputation for miraculous cures of the sick. I It attracted pilgrims from, all over southern Norway, but' acquired such notoriety for brawls and drunkenness that permission was given by the church government in Copenhagen to pull it down. This led to the church being demolished in 1808. Now, it is planned to rebuild it, complete with bells. St. Thomas a’Beckett was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 by knights of King Henry 11, whom he i had offended.
