Death Of Kidney Transplant Patient
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 9. One of the first patients in New Zealand to have a kidney transplanted from an unrelated donor, Mrs Beverley Anne McKinley, aged 26, of Dunedin, died today in the Auckland Hospital.
Mrs McKinlay received the transplant on May 21. The kidney, which was taken from a young person who died of cerebral haemorrhage, failed to function and was removed. An artificial kidney machine was used until two months ago when a second kidney transplant was performed. Mr J. K. Grattan, aged 36, of Te Aroha, received a kidney transplant on May 21, from the same unrelated donor as Mrs McKinlay. He is reported to be doing fine and working part-time.
Mrs McKinlay, formerly Miss Robertson, was a prominent senior basketball player in Dunedin. She represented Otago in both outdoor and indoor basketball and had been a coach for her club, Otago High School Ex-Girls Mrs McKinlay’s interests included swimming—a sport at which she represented Otago as a 15-year-old.
