Engineering School
Sir,—ln spite of over a million pounds spent on buildings and equipment, the university council has decided to restrict entries into the School of Engineering. This is unfortunate at a time when the effect of the increased birth-rate is reaching the universities. Two streams of students could use the School of Engineering, because the lecture rooms are used only for half the day. Laboratories would be more difficult to arrange, but it could be done. With two streams of students there would have to be a corresponding Increase in staff. It makes the arguments of those responsible for such a move look ridiculous when overseas universities manage to cope with the problem. I visited in May the Tung Shi University in Shanghai where not only is it a superior university to the School of Engineering, but there are 7000 students. Where there is a will there is a way.—Yours, etc., P.J.A. December 8, 1966.
