Girl’s Story Doubted

(N.Z. Press Association)

DUNEDIN, Dec. 6.

Because of certain discrepancies in her statements the police have decided not to continue inquiries in the case of a 17-year-old Dunedin girl who accepted a ride with a stranger on Thursday night, and went to a Milton house early next

morning in a distressed state with her hands tied behind her back with wire.

The girl was reported to have been picked up opposite the Dunedin Chief Post Office between 11 p.m. and 11.15 p.m. by two young men in an old model English car.

She was later admitted to Dunedin Hospital. She was discharged on Sunday.

Chief Detective J. Marshall said today that the girl’s injuries seemed to be consistent with a fall from a slowly-moving vehicle.

He said that the occupants of the house in Milton had promptly reported the Incident to the police. They feared she had been assaulted.

The girl now did not wish the police to continue their investigations. Mr Marshall said the police had made extensive investigations, but her allegations had prov cd difficult to verify and discrepancies in her stories had given the police occasion to hold doubts.
