General Education For Trainee Teachers Urged

General education of trainee teachers before beginning to specialise was advocated by the principal of Christchurch Teachers’ College (Mr G. Guy) at an end-of-year address to students at the college in the Civic Theatre yesterday morning. “I do hope it is possible to give those people who know what they want the specialist training they deserve,” said Mr Guy. “But I do think it is unfair that some who do not know what they want to do should have to specialise at once.-1 hope it will be possible to have a general course for two years before they specialise.” He said the meeting ended the eighty-ninth year of the college.

“Over 560 teachers are going out to educate about 16,000 children. This is a tremendous responsibility for the college. “It is sometimes implied that we neglect the three ‘Rs’ ”, said Mr, Guy. “I want to assure you that in recent years this has not been true.” The college had a mathematics department, a professor in charge of reading, and a special sub-department being set up on writing. Other speakers were the chairman of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr A. S. Murray), the associate principal of the college (Mr E. P. Blampied), the college president and president of the Division A Students’ Union (Mr T. A. Squires), the college vicepresident and president of the Secondary Students’ Union (Mr A. S. Poole), and the interim president (Mr B. S. Newcombe). The Student Instrumental Group, the Secondary Students Choral Group, and the Division A choir, presented items.
