SURFER RULED INELIGIBLE

The former New Zealand surf life-saving representative, D. Dalton, was ruled ineligible for surf competition by the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last night.

The council confirmed that a declared professional could not take part in surf competition. Dalton is a teacher of swimming in his father’s private pool at North Beach.

The chairman (Mr A. J. Donaldson) reported that Dalton had been allowed to compete under protest in the national surf trials at Wellington last week-end. Report On Records A report on national records is to be brought down by the championships committee, at the behest of the council. The move was prompted by an application from the Auckland centre for a junior girls’ 100 yards freestyle record by Susan Bailey. The keeper of records, Mr R. A. Stewart, said the N.Z.A.S.A. rule book laid down that records could be recognised only for national championship distances. The 100 yards was not one of these.

Earlier this year the council had approved an application for a junior girls’ 100 yards backstroke record by Glenda Stirling (Auckland), said Mr D. W. Cain. “We cannot refuse this application or we will be in the gun,” he said. Mr Donaldson did not agree. The council, having had its attention drawn to the error, should take steps to rectify the position, he said. Miss Bailey’s application was held over, pending the

presentation of the committee’s report On behalf of the Canterbury centre, Mr B. B. MacKenzie made a verbal application for a national junior girls' 220 yd butterfly record for Miss Tui Shipston, who recorded 2min 43.75ec last Saturday in the St. Albans pool. He said he made the move subject to a written application being presented by the centre. The matter was also referred to the championship committee.
