Mrs Gladys Ethel Boyd, who for many years was prominent in local body work in Christchurch and at Lyttelton, died in Christchurch yesterday. She was 68. Mrs Boyd was a member of the North Canterbury Hospital Board for 12 years and a member of the Lyttelton Borough Council for 18 years. Born in Lyttelton, Mrs Boyd remained there all her life. She was educated at the Lyttelton District High School. Mrs Boyd’s work for local bodies began after her marriage.

During the 18 years she was a member of the Borough Council, Mrs Boyd’s main in-

terest was with the health and sanitation committee of which she was chairman for a long period. Until her death she was chairman of the council’s traffic committee.

Mrs Boyd was the council’s representative on the Allocation Committee for State Housing; and on the Patriotic Committee.

In her years with the North Canterbury Hospital Board, Mrs Boyd served on its benevolent, building, and public health committees.

For a long time she was a member of the Lyttelton subcentre of the St. John Ambulance. She also served as a member of the New Zealand Child Health Council. Her other interests included membership of the executive of the Save the Children Fund, the Urban Fire Council, the Rapaki Women’s Welfare League, and the Canterbury School Committee Association of which she was president for a term. For many years Mrs Boyd was an executive member of the Labour Representation Committee.

She was a justice of the peace for 12 years. Until she became ill some months ago, Mrs Boyd continued to play an active role in community affairs and always attended any meeting or function where her presence was required. Her husband died five years ago. Mrs Boyd is survived by three married daughters, and three sons.

As a mark of respect the Lyttelton Borough Council’s ensign was flown at half mast yesterday.
