RURAL INDUSTRIAL ZONE WANTED

A proposal by the Waimairi County Council to establish a rural industrial zone on North Canterbury Catchment Board land in an area off Johns road between Sawyers Arms road extension and Shipleys road should be allowed, Dr. W. R. Holmes, a member of the board, said at the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority yesterday.

The executive said it had sought confirmation that the proposal was for a special rural zone as proposed for an area at Chaneys and not intended to be an industrial zone.

Dr. Holmes said it had been intended to return revenue that would go towards river

control work and relieve rates, but it had been little more than a liability. Now it seemed that it could be put to some use and the revenue used to benefit ratepayers. It had been suggested that the Chaneys land was not attractive to industrial developers, but it had been shown that the new proposed area was. Dr. Holmes said. “It will be developed in spite of King Canute or anyone else, and my board hopes that no impediment will be placed in the way of such development.”
