Testimonials

Testimonials of character given by St Mary’s College were not automatically issued to girls leaving school, but had to ber earned by co-opera-tion and good conduct, the principal of the college, Sister M. Teresita, said at the annual prize-giving yesterday. The college could only write about what it knew, and no school could be expected to know all that a girl did outside school hours. School references were perhaps unfair, since the school did not really know the complete child in some cases; the school only knew what it saw of the child during school hours and what it heard of her conduct outside school hours. A testimonial could only assess a girl’s character insofar as the school knew her, and this might be very far from being a .true and complete picture, Sister Teresita said.

Overcast Day

Light to moderate easterly winds brought overcast skies and scattered light rain to Christchurch yesterday. Temperatures were low, the maximum recorded at Harewood being 55 degrees at 9 a.m. and again at noon. At 6 a.m. the temperature at Harewood was 49 degrees and at 3 p.m. it was 54 degrees. A temperature of 55 degrees was recorded in the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. The temperature gauge on the Government Life building registered 55 degrees at 4.30 p.m.

Voyage South

Among passengers who joined H.M.N.Z.S. Endeavour at Lyttelton yesterday were three Queen Scouts. They are Dennis Hunt, of Lower Hutt, Anthony Mort, of Hastings, and David Goulden, of Southbridge. They will sail for Antarctica this week and will return to New Zealand aboard the ice-breaker Eastwind in mid-January.

Inquiries have been received on where contributions can be made to the New Zealand fund for the restoration of art treasures in Florence, damaged by floods. The Dante Alighieri Society of Christchurch will receive gifts through its treasurer, Mrs T. A. Tucker, 200 Idris road, Christchurch 5.
