Central Districts’ Young Captain
(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NTH. The naming of the 21-year-old New Zealand representative, V. Pollard, as captain is the biggest surprise in the Central Districts’ cricket team announced by the selectors (Messrs I. Colquhoun, R. D. Frater and M. Hoare) on Monday, Pollard replaces M. E. Chapple, who announced his retirement from first-class cricket last week because of a
recurring leg injury. O. Kinsella has also announced his retirement. Pollard gets the captaincy ahead of the favoured candidate, B. Congdon (Nelson). G. A. Bartlett (Marlborough), the New Zealand fast bowler, was not considered because he was unfit. The team, in likely batting order, is: D. Macleod (Manawatu), C. W. Garrod (Marlborough), B. Congdon (Nelson), J. Morrison (Taranaki), V. Pollard (Manawatu, captain), M. Baker (Hawke's Bay), B. Yuile (Manawatu), G. Douglas (Nelson), B. Hampton (Nelson), R. Schofield (Hawke’s Bay, vicecaptain), R. O. Collinge (Wairarapa), J. Howell (Hawke’s Bay).
