Irrigation Farm

An irrigation demonstration farm should have both spray and border-dyke methods, representatives of the Paparua, Ellesmere and Malvern County Councils agreed, when they met recently to discuss central plains irrigation proposals. Malvern has agreed to provide water for a demonstration farm in the Kirwee area, and Paparua will make water available for spray irrigation between Halkett and Islington. The Ministry of Works irrigation engineer (Mr S. G. Hamblett) told the combined meeting that the Government was primarily concerned with full irrigation development, and had found the borderdyke method to be the most economical. The meeting approved the establishment of a demonstration farm in the Malvern area, and the Malvern County Council was authorised to continue negotiations. Paparua county representatives also met six farmers Who could use water for sipray irrigation, and the proposed water charges were approved. Application forms for the supply of water were distributed and the election of a committee was deferred. The council has approved of water applications from Messrs G. W. McKenzie and G. Oakley.
