Caretakers’ Award

Minimum rates for members of the Federated Caretakers, Cleaners, Lift Attendants and Watchmen’s Association have been increased as a result of a Court of Arbitration ruling. They came into effect on October 31. The award rates of weekly pay for caretakers, cleaners (male) cleaner lift attendants, lift controllers, attendants and watchmen have been increased by 15s. Weekly wages now range from £l4 2s 6d to £l6 Is Bd. Female cleaners have been granted a weekly increase of 10s. The new award allows for wages to be paid weekly during the working hours within four days of completing the week’s work and not later than Thursday, provided that when a holiday falls on a Friday, wages shall be paid not later than Wednesday in that week. All overtime will now be calculated on a daily basis and all time worked in excess, or outside the hours prescribed, shall be considered overtime and shall be paid for at the following rates: time and a half for the first three hours and double time after that.

Now, on the completion ot three months* employment, a watchman employed on afternoon or night shift shall be paid an allowance of 3s. When a worker is called back to work after having completed his work and left his place of employment, he shall be paid a minimum of two hours. All workers except watchmen, shall be paid double time rates for Sunday work, with a minimum of three hours provided, however, that in the case of caretakers only work which is specifically required by the employer to be performed on a Sunday shall be so paid for. In lieu of the holidays provided, watchmen regularly and continually employed on afternoon or night shift as defined, shall be allowed three weeks* annual holiday on the completion of each year's service.
