Marriage Contract
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. Miss Winifred Bentley, of Wellington, became a “bartered bride” on Saturday when her husband, Mr A. Lane, also of Wellington, handed over a dowry of two goats to her father, Mr S. Bentley. Some months ago Mr Lane asked Mr Bentley if he could marry his daughter. Mr Bentley said he wanted two goats, or two sheep, for his daughter. During the engagement Mr Bentley kept referring to the “deal” and told Mr Lane not to forget. Near the wedding day Mr Lane arranged for a friend, Mr K. Cook, to buy two goats in Palmerston North. At the wedding reception on Saturday, Mr Lane presented his father-in-law with a contract to sign and handed over the two goats. The only indication Mr Bentley had that something was afoot was a note on the toast list: “Goats supplied by Mr K. Cook.”
