SHOT FIRED AT TANK
1000 Gallons Fuel Lost (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, Dec. 5. About 1000 gallons of diesel fuel were lost when a bullet punctured the Awakeri storage tank yesterday morning. A shot from a rifle, heard when a vehicle passed the Shell Oil Company depot about 6 a.m., brought the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company’s fire engine and the depot manager, Mr C. H. Brown, to the scene. Fuel spurting from the b 1let hole cleared the tank’s earth bank surround and spread through the depot, creating a fire danger. Some of the fuel flowed into the depot’s drainage system and had to be flushed out with foam. About 6000 gallons of fuel was saved by running it from the punctured tank to an underground tank. Repairs to the tank were made today.
