V.S.A. Workers Chosen

Four boys and two girls from secondary schools in Christchurch, and one girl from Nelson, are among 32 pupils from New Zealand secondary schools who have been selected by Volunteer Service Abroad for work in South-east Asia next year. Most of the students will teach in schools and training institutes in Sarawak, the British Solomon Islands, the New Hebrides, Fiji, Western Samoa and Tonga. Two students will work with young Women’s Christian Associations in Bangkok and Suva and one student has been assigned to an agricultural department in Sarawak. The Christchurch students

are Elizabeth Galloway, Diane Cropp, lan Armstrong, Owen Coup, David Gibson and Evan Parry. The Nelson student is Mary Oliver. Elizabeth Galloway, head prefect of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School will teach English and physical education and help with social welfare work at the Y.W.C.A., Bangkok. She is the daughter of the rector of St. Andrew’s College (Mr I. T. Galloway). Diane Cropp. aged 18, is a prefect at Avonside Girls’ High School and is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs D. L. Cropp, of 7 Poulton avenue. She has been assigned to the Palauli Junior High School, on Savaii Island, Western Samoa.

Owen Coup, the son of Mr and Mrs R- A. Coup, of 165 Waimairi road, is 18 and Is in the Upper Sixth form at St. Bede’s College. He will teach at a Government Junior Secondary School in Sarawak. David Gibson, Evan Parry, and lan Armstrong of Christchurch Boys’ High School, have been appointed to Government Junior Secondary Schools in Sarawak. David Gibson, who is 18, is a son of Mrs M. Gibson, of 5 Bramwell street, Shirley. Evan Parry is a son of Mr and Mrs G. G. Parry, of 169

St. Albans street. He is 17. lan Armstrong is the son of Mr and Mrs R. W. Armstrong, of Rakaia, and is 18. These students expect to leave New Zealand early in the New Year.

Mary Oliver, from Nelson Girls’ College, will teach at the Y.W.C.A. in Suva.
