Subdivisions Approved

Proposals for subdivisions at Hornby and Prebbleton, to provide 183 sections, were approved by the Paparua County Council at its monthly meeting last night. Group Developments, Ltd., was given permission to make a new street in the Oriana crescent area at Hornby, and to create 62 sections off Witham street. The council took one section for reserve, and required a cash contribution equal to the valuation of 10.1 perches. About 30.5 acres was involved in proposals to create 121 sections on Leeming’s property off Blakes road and Norris street, Prebbleton. The town planning committee said that the orderly development of rural townships was desirable. The area was one which had been mentioned as suitable for the extension of the township. Approving the scheme in principle, the council decided to apply to the Regional Planning Authority for inclusion of the land within the urban fence to provide initially for 35 sections off Blakes road. Cash Payment—A request on behalf of Blogg Brothers that the council reconsider

its decision requiring a cash reserve contribution of £12,040 on a proposed Colman avenue subdivision was declined, both the reserves and finance committees being opposed to it. Church Hall.—A petition ob. jecting to the proposed moving of the wooden Roman Catholic church on the Main South road to Our Lady of Victories School had been received, the Sockburn County Town Committee reported. The council decided to allow the move to another site to be chosen to the council’s satisfaction, or, if there are still objections, to deal with it as a conditional zoning use.

Water Supply.—Reporting on complaints of low pressure and rust in the water in Taurima street, the engineer (Mr A. Dyhrberg) said that most of the trouble at Wycola seemed to be caused by the rusting of house pipes. People tried to run two or more hoses, and could not expect good pressure. The council decided not to take action. Cycle Paths.—The engineer was asked to investigate the widening of the Waterloo road tarseal by 3ft a side to allow more < room for cyclists. It

was reported that there had been complaints about the danger to Riccarton High School pupils. Railway Line.—Signalling arrangements were being modified to overcome traffic delays at the Carmen road level-crossing, reported the Railways. Department. A crossing-keeper could not be provided in the meantime. Sports Area. —It was agreed to seal, at an estimated cost of £l6OO, a 142 ft x 110 ft area at Wycola Park for tennis and basketball. A 9ft fence, which would have cost about £BOO, will not be put up in the meantime.

Accepted.—The council accepted Mr F. C. de Lore’s offer to sell at £l2OO about an acre of land adjoining Sockburn Park. Spray Painting.—Miss J. Goodwin had complained about spray-painting being done next door to her home at Amyes road, and the resident concerned had previously said that the work was being done as a hobby, the town planning committee reported. The council decided to see if it could prohibit such activity. - r
